Boot Review – Danner Bull Run Moc Toe

Sponsored by: Danner

Finding quality boots at an affordable price isn’t always easy. If you go too cheap, then the quality really suffers. Past a certain price point, though, you’re likely paying as much for the name of the manufacturer as you are for the materials and workmanship of the boot. Unfortunately, even if you do find boots within that marvelous middle ground, you still may have trouble finding a pair that are truly stylish.

That’s one of the things that’s great about the Bull Run Moc Toe boot from Danner. You get great quality and unbeatable style without having to break the bank. Here’s a breakdown of just what it is that makes these boots such an exceptional value.

Workmanship

The very first thing you notice when you open the box and see the Bull Run boots is how exceptionally well made they are. No joke, they almost took my breath away. The leather was smooth and unblemished, the soles had no perceivable imperfections or marks, the stitching was perfect and unfrayed… I can’t remember the last time I saw a pair of boots that looked this solidly put together.

Once you get to look at them closer, however, the superior workmanship really shines through. The uppers seem to flow seamlessly into the sole, even though you can obviously see where the seam should be. Nothing seems extraneous or tacked on; every stitch and every piece seems to serve a purpose. Even after you wear them a while and start to break them in, you’ll find that they’re still just as solid and well put together as they were when you first opened the box.

Style

All Danner boots have their own look, taking the conventional boot and refining it just a bit. The Bull Run boots are no different. They’re sleek, slim and make kind of a bold statement with their black leather and light sole. The white stitching that adorns the toe seams and holds the upper to the sole just accentuate this look. You can stand out wearing these boots just about anywhere. With a change of laces, they might even be classy enough to pull off business casual at the office.

Depending on your needs, the Bull Run is available in steel toe and non-steel varieties. You’ll probably never find a steel-toe that looks this good, though, so if you need a pair of nice boots that offer additional protection for your foot then it really is a no-brainer.

Comfort

Style and workmanship aren’t worth much if the boots you’re wearing aren’t comfortable. Fortunately, this isn’t a problem with the Bull Run boots. The sleek style fits your foot naturally, preventing the problem that you have with some boots where the material is too stiff and rubs at your foot the wrong way. The insole provides a little bit of extra padding for the base of your heel, too, adding to your comfort whether you’re walking or standing. An additional slip-in insole can always be added if you want a little more comfort or custom support, but they aren’t a must-have here like they are with some boots.

Durability

If you know anything about Danner it’s probably that they use the best quality materials in their products. When you combine high-quality leather with great workmanship, you end up with boots that have a lot of life in them. Some boots start to show wear and tear the first few times that you wear them… that’s not these boots. After the first few weeks they still look almost like they’re fresh out of the box. Once they hit a few months then they’ll start to show a little character, but they’re still going to look a lot better than just about any other boot you can find.

The leather used in the boot uppers is oiled during the tanning process, so they’re more resistant to water (and the associated water damage) than other boots as well. This can add a lot to the life of the boots, since we all know what happens when some boots get wet too often. You might decide to go ahead and waterproof your Bull Runs with your preferred leather treatment, but even if you don’t, you’ll still have a lot more life in these boots than you would with a lesser product.

Price

The Bull Run Moc Toe style boots cost under $200, which is crazy for the quality of the materials and workmanship that you get. I can’t think of another boot this well made, stylish and comfortable in the under-$200 category. Even when you bump it up to the $250-$300 range you’ll be hard pressed to find too many competitors putting out boots this nice.

If you opt for the steel toe version, that only adds $10 to the total price of the boots. You’re still in the under-$200 bracket, and that’s just crazy. It’s hard to believe that something with this much quality can still be under $200 even after adding in a steel toe.

The Total Package

When you take all of these things and put them together, you wind up with one of the best overall boots that I’ve ever worn in the sub-$200 price range, perhaps even the nicest under $300. They’re an exceptional value, they’re comfortable, they’re stylish… I don’t know what more a person could want in a boot. They’re just that good.

Want a boot that’s good on the job as well as in the office? They come in a steel-toe variety and they offer electrical hazard protection through a non-conductive sole. They’re resistant to oil damage and slip resistant to help avoid falls on wet surfaces. When they start to wear out, you may even be eligible to get them recrafted by Danner so they’ll be good as new (my Bull Runs are eligible). If you give these boots a shot, you’ll probably find yourself wondering how you ever managed to get by without them.
