Your Choice: Electric or Diesel With JLG’s 8 New Rough-Terrain Scissors?

JLG has launched eight new re-engineered rough terrain scissor lifts, including four electric models, with platform heights ranging from 26 to 47 feet.

The battery-powered AC-drive models have the same platform heights and capacities as their four new diesel counterparts, which have 24.8-horsepower Kubota engines. All models have the same drive speeds of 3.5 mph when the platform is lowered.

The scissors also got several new features and can be driven at height.

The platforms feature 28% more working area than previous models. They also have a zero-platform offset, enabling the operator to get workers and material closer to the work area, JLG says.

The company’s LiftSense automatically monitors the platform weight and the lift’s tilt to determine the safe, allowable working envelope. This is part of JLG’s response to a new provision in the ANSI standards, which requires the machine to cut off to prevent overloaded platforms that can cause the machine to tip over. JLG’s new LCD display shows the operator the allowable height envelope before elevating. The control box with the display also includes a USB phone charger and phone holster.

The electric scissors can be equipped with the optional CleanGuard leak-containment system to protect floors or sensitive areas without having to cover the entire underside of the machine, the company says.

JLG RT2669 Rough Terrain Scissor LiftJLG RT2669Available as an option on the diesel models, QuikLevel Advanced allows the stowed scissor to level on side slopes up to 4.5 degrees and then elevate and be driven at full height. JLG says this comes in handy when working beside buildings that have been graded for drainage at a consistent slope.

Guardrails are designed to fold easily and within 3 minutes for fitting through tight spaces. The ANSI standards require guardrails to be 3 feet 7 inches high and no longer allow chain gates, so JLG made there’s foldable to achieve the required height but also allow them to be lowered when being transported.

JLG believes the demand for rough terrain scissors will increase because the new ANSI standards limit the use of scissor lifts when used outdoors. The lifts must be rated for wind speeds up to 28 mph for outdoor use and limit platform height accordingly. The JLG rough-terrain scissors can also be used indoors at full height.

“So we think there’s going to be a shift on outdoor work to rough terrain machines,” said Rafael Nunez, senior product manager, scissors and vertical lifts, at ConExpo 2020. “And we now have the most amount of machines and the most amount of working heights in the industry.”

Model name changes

The four battery-powered models come with “ERT” in the beginning of the model’s name. The four models powered by a diesel engine start with “RT” in their names.

JLG has also recently changed its nomenclature for its large rough terrain scissors, or LRT lineup, which have platforms that are larger in size and capacity. The company will follow the same model naming as the new RT models, with RT in front of the model’s name, as well as a different number scheme. They will no longer have the “LRT” in their name.

For instance, the 430LRT will now be the RT4394. The “43” denotes the lift’s height, and the “94” indicates its 94-inch width.

JLG RT4394 Engine Powered Scissor LiftThe 430LRT has been renamed the RT4394 as apart of JLG’s new nomenclature for its large rough terrain scissors.JLG says the name change will help rental stores and operators better identify the machines, as well as align the machines with its full RT lineup. The former LRT lifts will also get a refreshed decal design as can be seen in the photo above.
