Volvo Construction Equipment designed its new P5110B tracked and P5170B wheeled pavers for heavy commercial and light highway work.

The 20-ton pavers are powered by Volvo’s D6 173-horsepower Tier 4 Final engine, which is also used in the manufacturer’s L60H to L90H wheel loaders. Volvo says it designed the engine for fuel efficiency, with the tracked model able to achieve an average of 3.7 gallons per hour and the wheeled paver getting 3.3 gallons per hour. The engine is also designed to reduce vibrations and produce a low noise level of 79 decibels.

The pavers’ UltiMat160 screed delivers paving widths of 8 to 16 feet, with hydraulically adjustable extensions. With bolt-on extensions, an additional 2 feet of width is possible. Volvo says its quick coupling systems allow the extensions to be easily installed and removed.

The hopper has a 12-ton capacity. Rolled wings help prevent material buildup and reduce cleaning time, the company says. Sonic sensors regulate material flow and delivery. Two-wheel or four-wheel front-wheel assist is an available option for the wheeled model for more traction and gradeability.

Volvo placed access to service points at ground level. The company says the greaseless bearings in the auger and conveyor and the wear parts in the hopper are easy to replace.

Max paving speed is 180 feet per minute, and max paving depth is 10 inches.

Standard equipment includes automatic track tensioning, SmokEater Fumes Extraction and adaptive speed control. The pavers come ready for grade and slope control to be added.

Options include backup alarm, balloon and work lights, and automatic engine shutdown. CareTrack telematics is also available to provide paving data that can be accessed remotely.
